The Victorians is a popular topic in many schools, and this play gives the opportunity to explore the often overlooked but important area of workers' rights and the trades union movement. The Little Match Girl is a fictionalised account of a real event, the Bryant and May Match Workers Strike, which was popularised by Annie Besant. The way of life for people hovering around the poverty line or falling below it at the end of the nineteenth century is shown through variuos scenes, and the reality of life is contrasted wi3th the sentimental view of poverty given by Hans Christian Anderson's fairy story, from which the play takes its name.
