The Victorians is a popular topic in many schools, and this play gives the opportunity to explore the often overlooked but important area of workers' rights and the trades union movement. The Little Match Girl is a fictionalised account of a real event, the Bryant and May Match Workers Strike, which was popularised by Annie Besant. The way of life for people hovering around the poverty line or falling below it at the end of the nineteenth century is shown through variuos scenes, and the reality of life is contrasted wi3th the sentimental view of poverty given by Hans Christian Anderson's fairy story, from which the play takes its name.

At only 45 minutes in length, the play is a perfect introduction to the labour movement for children from Years 5 through to Year 8, particularly aimed at the upper years of primary school. As well as a copy of the script, you will receive a teachers' guide giving background information.

If your history topic is The Tudors, you will want to choose this script as one to focus on with your class. Mark Twain's novel imagined that Edward VI, the son of Henry VIII, had an identical double who was born into a poor family and that the two boys swapped places. In doing so, each learned about the other's way of life. This story is an excellent way for your children to learn, too, as they travel with Edward and Tom Canty into many differenct scenarios of Tudor existence.

Using much of Mark Twain's original language, the script is fun to perform but also educational enough for study in the classroom, and has been used for both purposes in the past.

Your pack contains a full script (90 minutes), which can be acted out or read in small groups or a whole-class scenario with parts for everyone! The play is aimed at 9-13 year-olds, although it could be adapted for younger children - for example, by using just an extract. Each scene can be used as a stand-alone example of a facet of Tudor Life (there is a banquest scene, a robbery, a prison scene, etc).
